Substation Designer

LUZCO was established in June 2017 and has now grown to 8 employees, with 3 additional expected to join within the next month. LUZCO is hiring an experienced substation designer with the willingness to help this emerging company grow by readily accepting different job titles as contracted work comes in. It is expected the core work will remain substation design, but the ability to switch to a different role if needed is a plus (e.g. substation rating analysis, survey of substations, potentially P6 scheduling). Position Description

  • Applicant will be responsible for performing electrical design on various high-voltage (32.4-230kV) substation projects. Duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create/modify one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, and cable lists for high voltage (32.4-230kV) substations.

  • Prepare/create construction documents for the installation of new, or modifications of existing, substations. Work includes bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and electrical details.

  • Prepare Substation ground grid, rigid and strain bus, and raceway designs.

  • Design auxiliary AC and DC power systems.

  • Create/modify technical specifications for major substation equipment, such power transformers, power circuit breakers and control house.

  • Coordinate with other engineers in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control and monitoring systems.

  • Provide engineering, construction, and testing & commissioning support for projects.

  • Perform basic calculations such as voltage drop, CT burden and saturation, lighting, and short circuit with minimal supervision.

  • Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision.

  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.

  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of one’s work.

  • Prepare engineering and construction estimates;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program and completion of FE exam.

  • Professional EE a plus.

  • Minimum 3 years of related experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience).

  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA and ANSI is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communications skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work self-sufficiently or lead a team of engineers

  • Previous consulting or utility experience preferred.

  • Valid driver's license required.
